Fort Benton - MT. The original Fort Benton was established in 1846 to maintain order in the region. The town was the northernmost navigable point on the Missouri and was known as the "Birthplace of Montana." At its peak, as many as 50 steamboats a season would visit Fort Benton. They served the wagon train routes to the north and west. The area was prosperous until the railroads took over.
